
The Bill Hoffman Quintet has been playing jazz in and around the Roanoke Valley for over 5 yrs. We play what is often referred to as “Straight Ahead Jazz, “ which includes the music of the jazz greats of the 50’s and 60’s, Latin Jazz (particularly Brazilian) and Jazz Standards.
Bill Hoffman, Electric guitar
Bill, has been playing some form of jazz since his days of playing with a group from Lexington VA called the Rhythm Makers. Although their main genre was “Soul Music,” they were “bitten” by the Jazz bug when they moved to Philadelphia in the early 60s and included jazz instrumentals in their repertoire. In addition to playing with his own group, he plays with a 20 piece Jazz Swing band, and 2 Caribbean style Steel Drum bands who include jazz in there repertoires. He has played with various other jazz musicians and groups in the Roanoke Valley.
Jonny Garr, lead vocalist
Jon is the lead vocalist with the group. He has performed with a variety of groups over the years including a Rock group (his high school days in Richmond, VA) several church choirs, as well as the Roanoke Symphony.
Henry Hancock, bass
Henry, a graduate of VA Tech with a degree in music, has played with a number of groups in the area, including jazz, rock, and big band jazz. He plays both electric bass and acoustic.
Jerry margolis, keyboard
Jerry is an accomplished musician and composer. He has played with several West Coast Jazz musicians including recording artists. He has written several compositions including one played by the Roanoke Symphony. He will be performing a jazz suite he composed for big bands this summer with a 20 piece orchestra.
Brett Reynolds, Drums
Brett is a jazz musician who moved to the Roanoke Valley from Upstate NY. He has been playing jazz and teaching percussion instruments for several years. He has performed with several jazz groups in the Roanoke Valley over the last several years, including big band jazz.
